WINTER PARK, FL - Today, U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., announced that Gregory Duane Skage of Winter Park High School has been accepted to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Earlier this year, Murphy nominated Skage to the Colorado Springs-based academy, where he will begin this fall and is expected to graduate in 2021 as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force.

“I was so proud to nominate Gregory, who is an exceptional student and athlete, and I congratulate him on his well-earned acceptance,” said Rep. Murphy. “It is an honor to nominate central Florida’s best and brightest to these academies so they may serve our country with distinction. I hope Gregory’s example will inspire other students in central Florida to consider serving our country as officers in the Air Force, Army, Navy or Marine Corps. I encourage anyone interested in applying to a service academy to contact my office for more information.”

Skage is a graduating senior of Winter Park High School, where he maintains a 3.78 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Skage also broke Florida’s pole vaulting record in February by clearing a bar set at 17 feet, 3 inches. He is the captain of the school track team and was named its MVP in 2016. Ranking among some the best universities in the world, the U.S. service academies are also among the most competitive. Of the tens of thousands who apply to the five military academies each year, only about 8 to 14 percent are accepted. All service academies, with the exception of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, require a Congressional nomination. Each academy offers young men and women a free college education at a highly-ranked, nationally-recognized academic program, while preparing them for an officer's commission in the armed forces.

The office of Congresswoman Murphy will be accepting nomination applications for the class of 2022 until September 7, 2017. For more information on the nomination process, please click here.
