Rep. Murphy Appointed to West Point Board of Visitors
Murphy is first U.S. Congresswoman from Florida ever to serve on Board
WEST POINT – U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., has been appointed by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to the Board of Visitors of the United States Military Academy at West Point, which oversees morale and discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods, and any other matters relating to the academy that the board decides to consider. Rep. Murphy is the first U.S. Congresswoman from Florida to be appointed to West Point’s Board of Visitors.
Today, Rep Murphy was at West Point, participating in her first Board of Visitors’ meeting.
“I’m grateful for this honor and look forward to helping preserve the academy’s standard of excellence in training leaders of character,” said Murphy, who also serves on the House Armed Services Committee and is a former national security specialist for the Department of Defense. “West Point produces the best Army officers in the world, and I will work with my fellow board members to ensure that every cadet continues to receive the world-class education, strong discipline, and invaluable leadership skills for which West Point is renowned.”
Other current members of the Board of Visitors include U.S. Senators Richard Burr, R-N.C., Kirsten Gillibrand, D- N.Y., and Chris Murphy, D-Conn., along with U.S. Representatives Mike Conaway, R-Texas, Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., Thomas Rooney, R-Fla., and Steve Womack, R-Ark., who also serves as the board’s chair.
###U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy represents Florida’s Seventh Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The district includes all of Seminole County and much of northern Orange County, including downtown Orlando, Maitland, Winter Park, and the University of Central Florida. Previously, Murphy was a businesswoman and college instructor who also served as a national security specialist in the Office of the Secretary of Defense where she received numerous awards for her distinguished service, including the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Civilian Service. Murphy lives in Winter Park with her husband and two children.
