U.S. Congresswoman Stephanie Murphy of Winter Park, Fla., today announced that Orange County, Seminole County and the city of Sanford will receive a total of nearly $11 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to expand the supply of affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and revitalize communities.

“Central Florida is one of the fastest-growing regions in the nation, but access to affordable housing is a serious challenge for both new and long-time residents. More investments in affordable housing will not only help families in need, it will also attract more and better-paying jobs to central Florida – making our community stronger for all. As co-chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s Housing Task Force, I am working in Congress to build bipartisan support for this critical issue,” said Murphy.

The following federal programs are providing the funds to central Florida: the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program, and the HOME program. Under CDBG, grants help construct quality housing and expand economic opportunities for families with low and moderate incomes. Under ESG, grants help families find permanent housing after they experience a housing crisis or homelessness. Under HOME, grants help fund housing for low-income families.

Orange County will receive $8.2 million under the CDBG, ESG and HOME programs; Seminole County will receive $2.3 million under these three programs; and the city of Sanford will receive $402,000 under the CDBG program.

Central Florida’s population is expected to grow significantly in the coming months as a result of many U.S. citizens relocating to the region from Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
